Decolonise City - Educational

Decolonise City - Educational

We know that Universities were created and built on colonialism, which has shaped and continues to shape our education system.

‘Decolonise City’ is not just a buzzword. It’s an anti-racist campaign aiming to centre Black and minoritized students at the heart of our institution. We aim to bring to light a decolonial perspective, which we believe is essential to anti-racist work and take a systemic approach for a systemic problem.

We understand that we cannot decolonise City in one year, however, for this academic year, we will be focusing on the following categories:

• Educational
• Student Services
• Social

Objectives of the campaign:

Ensure that City upholds its commitments with decolonising the curriculum:

1.

Student feedback demonstrates that students, especially BAME students, feel that they are reflected in their curriculum

2.

Staff independently design future teaching programmes with a decolonised mindset

3.

So far, Ruqaiyah Javaid (Vice-President Education):

  • has been attending student attainment working group project meetings where decolonising the degree awarding gap are discussed, ensuring that the student perspective and manifesto points are brought into the discussions.
  • successfully recruited 12 EDI Representatives who will be supporting projects such as Race Equality Charter, City EDI Committee and will conduct research on the experience of BAME students at City around the curriculum and experiences during Welcome Week.

Tackling the Degree Awarding Gap:

1.

Staff are more aware about the lived experiences of some BAME students and how they play a role in affecting it.

2.

University are more aware of what aspects of the teaching and assessment changes contributed to the reduction in the degree awarding gap and commit to continuing to keep these measures in place when in-person activity resumes.

3.

University to publish where the gap differs for programme.

4.

So far, through this campaign:

  • Ruqaiyah Javaid (Vice-President Education) has attended student attainment working group project meetings where decolonising the degree awarding gap are discussed, ensuring that the student perspective and manifesto points are brought into the discussions.
  • The degree awarding gap has reduced over 19/20 term.

Launch an Oppose Prevent campaign which is sustainable post-sabbatical year:

1.

Students understand why the SU opposes Prevent and why they should too.

So far, through this campaign:

  • Ruqaiyah Javaid (Vice-President Education) assisted with navigating the SU’s position on the Report/Support tool in relation to Prevent.
3.

Moving forward, this objectives for this campaign are:

  • Stalls for Islamophobia Awareness Month to raise awareness to Oppose Prevent.
  • Work with the University to remove Prevent from the Report & Support Tools report.
  • Submit a motion to Oppose Prevent trhough Student Members' Meeting.
